''I have experienced at first hand how comedy helps people address issues that might be difficult to discuss with others. That is why I am delighted to be a patron of ‘Lift the Lid Productions’. Through its various projects, it has made a tremendous contribution to raising awareness of mental health issues and tackling social stigma and I hope to see it go from strength to strength.''

Mental ill health a major public health challenge in Britain today and people with mental health problems are multiply disadvantaged. We need to work towards better services and we need to challenge the stigma and shame associated with mental illness. New and innovative approaches are needed to promote mental wellbeing and social inclusion, and the creative arts provide tremendous resources in tacking these difficult issues.  Of all the arts, drama and comedy have the greatest power to highlight the challenges of mental ill health and how it affects people and get messages across powerfully.
